On November 10, 2025, a trading standards officer from Dudley Council, Kuldeep Mann, expressed relief that the care home bosses who tried to steal an elderly resident's £175,000 fortune have been brought to justice.
The investigation began in September 2021 after Ms. Barnsley's cousin, Verna, filed a complaint about the Amberley Care Home in Brierley Hill, Dudley, where Ms. Barnsley was staying. Mann immediately noticed something suspicious about the will, which was written in different colored pens and had multiple handwritings, with signatures that did not match.
The will named the care home owners, Graham and Lyn Walker, and the former manager, Jamiel Slaney-Summers, as executors. However, Verna told trading standards that Ms. Barnsley had never wanted a will. Further investigation revealed that the care home had been keeping Ms. Barnsley there longer than necessary, and Slaney-Summers had been spending a significant amount of money on gambling, which could have been a motive for the fraud.
In October 2025, the trio was convicted of fraud. Mann expressed relief, stating that the jury took only 90 minutes to reach the verdict. He also noted that cases of carer fraud are all too common, and he urges people to make adult safeguarding referrals to alert the authorities.
