A grassroots football club in Bromsgrove has suffered a devastating loss after thieves broke in and stole thousands of pounds worth of equipment. Catshill FC had its locked container prised open on Saturday night, resulting in the theft of two riding lawnmowers, goalposts, five bags of footballs, and other grounds maintenance tools.
Chairman Dean Mitchell described the incident as "mindless stupidity" that negatively impacts local children. The stolen lawnmowers and footballs alone are valued at £7,500. The club, which runs 24 teams for ages four to seniors, relies on parent subscriptions and has initiated an online fundraiser to recoup losses.
This theft comes shortly after Catshill FC received the Grounds Team of the Year Award in the Worcestershire FA's Grassroots Football Awards. The contrast between this achievement and the subsequent equipment loss has been described as particularly tough by club officials.
Despite being in the off-season, some teams do continue training. The club has thankfully received some local donations to aid immediate needs, but the overall impact of the theft is significant for the community's "happy place."
