Google India Nodal Officer Accused in Rs 7.95 Lakh Fraud
30 Jul
Summary
- Defence PSU employee lost Rs 7.95 lakh to a fake trading app.
- The app was downloaded from the Google Play Store.
- Google India's nodal officer faces negligence charges.

A recent case registered at the Cyberabad Cyber Crime police station involves charges of negligence against Google India's nodal officer. This action follows a complaint by a defence PSU employee who lost Rs 7.95 lakh to a purported fake trading application. The victim reported being lured into investing through the app, which was available on the Google Play Store, after being contacted on social media in July. Initial deposits were made, and profits were reportedly shown, but subsequent withdrawal requests were denied, with the victim being asked to pay a withdrawal tax. The availability of the app on Google Play Store led the victim to believe it was legitimate. This development is part of a broader pattern, as Google India's Head has also been named as a co-accused in three other recent cyber fraud cases with similar modus operandi. Complainants in those cases also alleged downloading fraudulent investment applications from the Play Store. Google stated in July that an investigation was initiated after being alerted to such cases, confirming only one app complied with their financial services policy and was on the Play Store.
