Student Dies After Viral Shaming Over Littering

A 22-year-old college student in North Goa died by suicide on Thursday night, just hours after being released from a police station. He had been summoned for allegedly littering a roadside, an act captured in a viral video that quickly led to him receiving numerous abusive messages online. His family reported he was deeply upset by the online trolling and condemnation.

The incident began on Wednesday evening when the student was seen discarding an empty cardboard box. A local recorded the act and the video subsequently went viral. On Thursday afternoon, he was called to the police station with his sister. Despite his mother's apologies, the police registered an offense under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act and the BNS. He was reportedly told he would have to pay a fine, report to the station for three days, and could not leave the city.

Upon returning home around 10 PM, the student was visibly stressed. His family noted he spent time scrolling through social media, likely seeing the widespread criticism and comments. His eldest sister found him deceased in his room around midnight. Police are investigating the cause of death, with preliminary findings suggesting he used an airgun. The family has filed a complaint against the person who recorded and shared the video, attributing the tragedy to vigilantism and social media bullying. Goa's Chief Minister has ordered an inquiry into the police's handling of the situation.
