Colva police successfully apprehended Kasim Fayaz, a 36-year-old from Udupi, Karnataka, bringing closure to five resort theft cases reported since 2021. The most recent incident occurred last month, involving the theft of gold and cash exceeding Rs 3 lakh from a Benaulim star resort. The accused allegedly gained access by climbing onto balconies and entering guest rooms, stealing valuables from multiple occupants.
Utilizing CCTV footage and mobile location data, investigators tracked Fayaz to his Udupi residence, where he was arrested. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to his crimes and admitted to selling the stolen jewelry to a goldsmith in Karnataka. Police also linked him to a previous theft at a Varca beach resort in 2021, where Rs 25,000 was stolen.
Police are actively engaged in recovering the stolen property, with assurances that items from the recent theft have been traced. The investigation has also brought to light potential security vulnerabilities in resort establishments, which may have facilitated these recurring offenses. Fayaz is known to be a habitual offender with a history of similar hotel-related crimes.
