Seventeen individuals were apprehended across Greater Manchester as part of Operation Treacle on Bonfire Night, an initiative aimed at curbing anti-social behaviour. The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, saw police seize over 600 fireworks and conduct more than 160 stop-and-searches.
Incidents of fireworks being misused and fired in residential streets were reported, prompting police intervention. In Tameside, eight arrests were made after youths were observed misusing fireworks in Millennium Green Park. Drone units assisted in tracking a group, leading to arrests on suspicion of affray near a local shop.
Officers utilized dispersal powers throughout the evening to prevent further disorder, with patrols set to continue. The misuse of fireworks and engagement in anti-social behaviour, which included firing fireworks at emergency vehicles, was condemned by authorities. Legal reminders were issued, emphasizing that possessing fireworks in public as a minor or setting them off in the street is illegal.
