In Georgia, a farm owner is distraught after police fatally shot her baby donkey, HeeHaw, on her property last week. Hannah Israel claims Polk County officers entered her pasture without permission while reportedly searching for a missing person.
Israel stated on Facebook that the donkey approached the officers, braying, and they claimed to feel endangered, subsequently shooting the animal after attempting to tase it. She described HeeHaw as a friendly animal accustomed to petting zoos and believes he was only alerting them to a stranger.
Believing the shooting was unlawful, Israel is pursuing legal action and has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover her legal expenses. The campaign has already raised more than $70,000 towards its $90,000 goal, with surplus funds earmarked for animal care.
This event echoes other recent incidents where law enforcement has faced criticism for fatally shooting animals, including a case in Los Angeles in June where officers shot a dog named Jameson.
