Amritpal Singh, identified as a key figure in the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang and a wanted gangster, was detained at the Moldova border. His apprehension occurred subsequent to an Interpol red corner notice, which was issued based on a request from the Punjab Police. This action was facilitated through collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, CBI, and other central agencies.
The Punjab Police recently inaugurated the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC). This specialized unit, led by IG-Counterintelligence Ashish Choudhary, aims to locate criminals residing abroad and facilitate their extradition to face legal proceedings in Punjab. Singh is reportedly wanted for multiple serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, and drug smuggling.
Authorities stated that Amritpal Singh had fled the country using a fraudulent passport but continued to make extortion calls, particularly targeting businessmen in the Amritsar region. Legal and diplomatic processes are currently in motion to secure his extradition or deportation back to India to stand trial.
