What appeared to be a natural death of a 33-year-old woman in Gandhidham, Kutch, has been reclassified as murder following a forensic postmortem. The autopsy revealed the victim, Sonam Sunar, died from multiple assault injuries. Her husband, Sultan Sumra, has been arrested by Kutch East police on murder charges.
The incident occurred on July 17 at their residence in the Bharatnagar area. Gandhidham City A Division police became suspicious, leading to an investigation. The forensic examination concluded that Sonam had suffered fatal injuries from an assault involving a belt with a metal buckle.
According to the FIR filed by Sonam's brother, Rahul Sunar, Sonam had previously informed a cousin that Sultan frequently assaulted her and feared he would kill her. Sonam had eloped with Sultan in 2011 and had lost contact with her family for the past four years.
Police investigations suggest Sultan harbored frequent suspicions about Sonam's character and subjected her to physical and mental abuse. He allegedly used a belt to inflict the fatal injuries. The police have recovered the belt used in the assault. The couple had three children. Sultan reportedly worked as a driver and in casual labor.
