Art World Shock: Gallerist Murdered, Husband Accused

Renowned New York City art gallerist Brent Sikkema was found murdered in his Rio de Janeiro townhouse on January 14, 2024. The alleged assassin, Alejandro Triana Prevez, has reportedly confessed to stabbing Sikkema 18 times and implicated Brent's estranged husband, Daniel Sikkema, in a murder-for-hire plot. The motive appears to stem from a bitter divorce and significant financial disputes between the couple.

Prosecutors allege that Daniel Sikkema orchestrated the murder, pointing to voice notes and text messages as evidence of his motive and intent. These communications, dating back to May 2023, allegedly detail Daniel's desire for money, including substantial claims for child support and alimony, and express a wish for Brent's death rather than divorce. Daniel also reportedly inquired about claiming assets as a widower.

The couple met approximately 19 years ago and married in 2013, later having a son via surrogate. The marriage reportedly deteriorated after Daniel proposed an open marriage and a move to Cuba in 2019, which Brent rejected. Their divorce proceedings, initiated in 2022, became increasingly acrimonious, with allegations of attempted fraud and Daniel absconding with their son.

Daniel Sikkema has pleaded not guilty, with his defense arguing that the prosecution lacks direct evidence and that Prevez was motivated by personal issues. However, the prosecution presented evidence suggesting Daniel paid over $10,000 through intermediaries to have his husband killed, using Prevez, a former security guard, for the assassination.
