Family Seeks Answers After Student's Death

A family is seeking answers from Fresno Unified after their 14-year-old son, Daniel Padilla Jr., died following a collapse during P.E. class on March 9. Attorneys for Daniel's mother filed a writ mandate in Fresno civil court, requesting records from the district concerning the incident. During a hearing on Wednesday, the family's legal team argued that parents are entitled to know the circumstances surrounding their child's death. They also indicated awareness of a surveillance video that may have captured the events leading up to Daniel's collapse and are seeking access to it.

Attorneys for Fresno Unified stated that the request for documents is premature, with the district reviewing approximately 300,000 documents and addressing privacy concerns. They asserted the district is not intentionally withholding information. Judge Robert M. Whalen questioned the aggressive timeline of the legal action, noting it followed the student's death by only two months. Ultimately, the judge ruled that the district is not required to immediately provide the requested documents. The family's attorneys expressed disappointment but stated they would persist in their efforts to uncover details about what transpired and whether Daniel could have been saved.

The next court hearing is scheduled for early September, with both parties hoping for a clearer understanding of potential information release by that time. The family awaits autopsy results and a written update from the district.
