Summary
- Woman allegedly defrauded 238 people out of over $40,000.
- She claimed to have cancer to fundraise on GoFundMe.
- Donations were used for personal debts, not treatment.

A woman in Florida has been accused of a significant scam involving a fake cancer diagnosis. Maribeth Ellen Jones, 51, allegedly collected over $40,000 from 238 individuals in her community by creating a GoFundMe page for cancer treatment. Authorities report that these funds were diverted to cover her personal debts.
To enhance the deception, Jones reportedly cut her hair, claiming it was in preparation for chemotherapy. Investigations revealed prior instances where Jones had benefited from similar fundraising schemes by falsely reporting terminal illnesses. She surrendered to authorities on August 5, facing a second-degree felony charge for grand theft.
Sheriff Kevin Rambosk condemned the act, highlighting the exploitation of public generosity. GoFundMe confirmed the removal of Jones's fundraisers and banned her account, refunding all $41,000 to donors via their Giving Guarantee. Donors expressed deep betrayal, with one stating her husband died of cancer. Authorities advise caution when donating online, recommending research into organizers and seeking transparency.
