Summary

Authorities in Volusia County, Florida, are implementing new measures to curb disruptive spring break "takeover" events. Sheriff Michael Chitwood declared the county's intent to pursue civil lawsuits against promoters, aiming to seize their assets. This aggressive stance seeks to financially penalize those organizing large, unsanctioned gatherings that can endanger public safety.
To further enforce regulations, a "special event zone" has been established, empowering officers to issue higher fines and penalties. This action comes as popular destinations like Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach experience significant crowds. The recent weekend saw 133 arrests and the seizure of six weapons.
Sheriff Chitwood also addressed misinformation circulating on social media regarding a supposed shooting. He clarified that the loud noises heard were from water bottles being crushed to create panic. "There were zero gunshots on the beach," Chitwood stated, emphasizing the department's efforts to manage the large influx of visitors, who were generally cooperative.
