24 Jun
Summary
- Search resumes for potential victims linked to serial killer Billy Mansfield.
- Genetic genealogy is aiding in identifying a remaining victim.
- Mansfield confessed to a cold case murder of a teen in 1980.

Investigators have reopened a search in Hernando County, Florida, for additional victims of serial killer Billy Mansfield. The search, involving the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, FBI, and State Attorney's Office, began Monday at Dry Creek Ranch after cadaver dogs indicated the presence of human remains.
This investigation revisits information connected to Mansfield, whose family lived in Hernando County. In the early 1980s, a search of family property uncovered four bodies. While three victims have been identified, genetic genealogy is now assisting in identifying the fourth victim and finding their relatives.
Billy Mansfield, who is serving multiple life sentences, had previously suggested more victims might be located in Hernando, Pasco, and Pinellas counties. The sheriff's office reopened the case three years ago, reviewing files and interviewing Mansfield, who confessed in January 2026 to the 1980 murder of Carol Ann Barrett in Jacksonville.
