9 Mar
Summary
- Parents arrested for allegedly faking son's cancer to solicit donations.
- Donations were used for personal purchases instead of medical treatment.
- Teenager was placed in protective care due to well-being concerns.

Edward Downing and Stephanie Skeris, parents from Florida, were arrested on February 27, 2026, accused of fabricating their teenage son's cancer diagnosis to amass thousands of dollars. The deception allegedly began in December 2024 after a hospital visit where no cancer was detected. The couple reportedly informed their community that their son had cancer in multiple body areas.
Community fundraising events, including a donation drive at a pizza restaurant and an online GoFundMe page, were established for the boy's supposed treatment and surgery. However, an investigation by the Dixie County Sheriff's Office revealed that the collected donations were diverted by Downing and Skeris for personal use, such as clothing, fuel, and dining out. Consequently, the teenager was moved into protective custody due to concerns for his welfare and medical care.
Downing and Skeris face felony charges including scheme to defraud, communications fraud, and neglect of a child. These charges carry a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a $5,000 fine each. They have been released on bond, with a court date pending. The sheriff's department acknowledged the community's generosity in donating in good faith.
