Taylor Schaefer, a Florida mother, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison following her plea to 25 felony charges. These charges include aggravated child abuse, kidnapping, and tampering with a witness, stemming from the severe abuse of her 5-year-old son by her boyfriend, Shawn Stone. The investigation began in May 2023 after Schaefer viewed home surveillance footage of the abuse.
The footage allegedly showed Stone inflicting physical harm on the child, including punches and strikes with a mop, following incidents of bedwetting. Medical professionals documented 46 visible injuries on the boy, including a fractured skull. Further investigation revealed video evidence of Schaefer's presence during the abuse, as well as the child being left bound, confined in a dog cage, and deprived of food.
Other children in the household also suffered abuse. A 9-year-old child was reportedly forced to drink and be sprayed with boiling water, and beaten. A 7-year-old child did not receive adequate care for a serious medical condition. The case against Shawn Stone, who faces charges of aggravated child abuse and numerous other counts, is still pending.
Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed profound shock and disgust at the depravity captured on camera, noting that the footage documented "one of the worst things we've ever seen." He emphasized the mothers' fundamental duty to protect children, not to inflict harm, as stated by State Attorney R.J. Larizza.
