A tragic incident in Florida City on June 10 resulted in the death of a 5-year-old girl after her 4-year-old brother shot her with a loaded handgun. Authorities responded to the home shortly before 2 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. The girl, Ja'nova Raylani, was found with gunshot wounds to her arm and torso. She was airlifted to a hospital but later died from her injuries.
Ashley Marie Hosendove, the mother, has been arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter and culpable negligence. She reportedly told police that she had placed the loaded 9mm handgun in a fanny pack, which was then stored in a bedroom closet. She stated she woke up to the sound of the gunshot and discovered her daughter injured shortly thereafter.
Investigators determined that Hosendove demonstrated a "conscious indifference of the welfare of her children" by not properly storing the firearm. The gun's mechanical safety was also reported to be non-functional. Hosendove is currently being held without bond, with her next court date scheduled for September 11. Loved ones described Ja'nova as a bright, sassy, and loving child who brought joy to those around her.
