Father's Paternity Doubt Linked to Infant's Death
4 Aug
Summary
- Man charged with murder after fatally injuring infant.
- Defendant questioned paternity of the 6-month-old victim.
- Leaf blower abuse video led to initial child abuse charges.

James Westervelt, 38, is facing murder charges in connection with the fatal injuries sustained by a 6-month-old infant in August 2024. Authorities have stated that Westervelt questioned the child's paternity, a fact later verified after the infant's death.
Earlier this year, Westervelt was arrested on child abuse charges following the discovery of a video depicting him using a leaf blower on the infant. The affidavit indicated the leaf blower was directed at the child's face, causing breathing difficulties. Westervelt admitted to the act, claiming he thought it was funny.
While already in custody for abuse, Westervelt was indicted for murder in July 2026. Investigators re-interviewed him, uncovering contradictions that led to the murder charge. The infant was hospitalized after being found unresponsive on August 12, 2024, with injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
An autopsy confirmed the infant died from blunt force trauma. Westervelt offered conflicting accounts, including that his 2-year-old son might have harmed the infant. He also admitted to using methamphetamine and being upset about his wife's absence, suggesting his actions could have been rougher than intended.
