Counterfeit Airbag Lawsuit Nets $603M Award

A Florida jury has awarded $603 million to the family of Destiny Byassee, a 22-year-old mother of two who died in June 2023. The wrongful death lawsuit accused Chinese manufacturer Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd. (DTN) of producing a counterfeit airbag inflator that catastrophically failed during a low-speed collision.

Byassee's family argued that the defective DTN inflator exploded, sending metal fragments into the vehicle's cabin instead of cushioning the impact. A fragment struck Byassee in the throat, causing fatal blood loss. DTN, which did not attend the trial, denied its products were counterfeit or defective.

This verdict follows a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation linking DTN inflators to at least 10 deaths and two injuries in the U.S. NHTSA is considering a permanent ban on DTN inflators, warning consumers not to drive vehicles with suspect components installed.

Attorneys for Byassee's estate hailed the judgment as a crucial step in holding counterfeit parts manufacturers accountable. The substantial award, stemming from a single fatality, sends a strong message to the global counterfeit auto parts industry regarding the severe risks posed by substandard safety equipment.
