Diego Alfredo Medina-Acosta, a 37-year-old hotel worker, was arrested on October 5, 2026, facing a first-degree grand theft charge. He is accused of stealing approximately $7,854 worth of food from the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. The stolen inventory reportedly included a significant quantity of lobster tails, pork belly, snapper, and calamari, among other items.
Investigators cited surveillance footage that allegedly shows Medina-Acosta entering food storage areas before his scheduled shift and using non-employee entrances. One clip reportedly shows him removing a container of lobster and returning it empty. Medina-Acosta told police he clocked in early to prepare for his duties and left briefly to drop off laundry, claiming he was thawing lobster.
The hotel stated it has a zero-tolerance policy for theft and that an internal investigation was corroborated by an external one. Medina-Acosta resigned from his position following the incident. The Biltmore Hotel is recognized as a top workplace in South Florida.
