Fernhill School Demolition Amid Break-ins & Fire
4 Nov
Summary
- Historic Fernhill School buildings to be demolished due to vandalism.
- A fire broke out at the vacant school premises in September.
- Application seeks to demolish later additions, preserving the original building.
Buildings at the former Fernhill School in Rutherglen are facing potential demolition following significant security and safety concerns since the school's closure earlier this year. An application has been submitted to South Lanarkshire Council to remove structures surrounding the historic Fernhill School property.
Since the school's closure in mid-2026, the vacant site has experienced multiple break-ins and instances of anti-social behavior. These issues were compounded by a fire that broke out in an ancillary building in September 2026, raising serious concerns for the safety of the premises and the preservation of the original C-listed building.
The current owner, Retronix Semiconductor, plans to demolish additions made over the years, which are not part of the original late 19th-century structure. The school, which catered to children aged two to 18, closed due to rising costs and other challenges, leading to its unoccupied state.
