80 Vials of Deadly Opioid Vanish from Jewish Hospital

Eighty vials of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, have been stolen from the pharmacy of Rome's Jewish Hospital. The disappearance of this dangerous substance, which is up to one hundred times more powerful than morphine, has triggered an urgent response from the Italian government.

The theft occurred on June 24th without any apparent signs of forced entry into the safe where the vials were stored. Access to the keys was limited to several hospital staff members, leading to an immediate investigation by Rome prosecutors. The case is being handled by the Carabinieri's NAS unit, with allegations of theft and intent to supply narcotic substances.

In response to the incident, an emergency meeting was convened at Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Italian Prime Minister's office. The government reiterated the importance of adhering to strict procedures for managing high-risk medications to safeguard public health. Further steps include reconvening the monitoring committee for the anti-fentanyl plan and issuing a new circular to enhance checks on fentanyl's improper use and storage in medical facilities.

The Lazio Region has also initiated an extraordinary inspection of the hospital pharmacy and instructed local health authorities to verify the management of narcotic drugs across all regional hospitals. These measures aim to guarantee the highest safety standards and prevent future incidents involving potent substances like fentanyl, which is classified as a national emergency in North America due to its high risk of abuse.
