FBI Nabs Suspect in Guthrie Family Threats

Federal authorities have arrested Derrick Callella, a 42-year-old California resident, for allegedly threatening the family of television personality Savannah Guthrie. The charges include transmitting ransom demands and using a telecommunications device for harassment. These actions followed the disappearance of Guthrie's 84-year-old mother, Nancy, between January 31 and February 1, 2026.

Callella is accused of texting two family members, seeking Bitcoin ransom shortly after the Guthrie family released a public plea. He also made a brief call to another relative. Law enforcement traced the messages to Callella's address and IP. He later admitted to sending the texts and obtaining family information online, stating he wanted to see if the family would respond.

Authorities emphasized their commitment to protecting victims and holding accountable those who exploit tragic situations. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California coordinated rapidly with the FBI and local law enforcement to apprehend Callella within 24 hours. A $50,000 reward is offered for information leading to Nancy Guthrie's recovery or the arrest of those involved.

Separately, a different ransom demand was sent to a Tucson, Arizona news affiliate on February 2, 2026, from an unknown source. Callella has a prior record, having been arrested in October 2025 for overtime theft. The FBI stated that imposters attempting to profit from this situation will be investigated and held accountable.
