A 26-year-old Minnesota father, Omni Maxx Morningstar, faces charges of second-degree manslaughter following the death of his 10-month-old son, Remington Tristan Morningstar. The incident occurred last October 1 in Mankato. Authorities were called to the residence where Morningstar stated he had 'a practically dead baby.'
According to court documents, Morningstar placed his son face down for a nap around 11 AM, covering him with a 20-pound weighted blanket. He did not check on the infant again until nearly 4 PM, discovering him unresponsive and overheated at 104.7 degrees. The child was pronounced dead at 4:54 PM.
During the investigation, Morningstar mentioned his son had a history of fevers and that weighted blankets had been used previously. His son's mother also reported a previous incident where the baby was found overheated under a blanket about a month prior. Morningstar admitted to occasionally covering his son's head to muffle crying.
Morningstar has been charged with a felony carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. He reportedly told police he was autistic and had forgotten about his son while playing video games.
