More than a month after Richard Harris, 65, was discovered deceased on a trail in Farmington Hills' Woodland Hills Park, authorities have apprehended a suspect. Gabriel Antonio Bercea, 23, was arrested on June 8 and subsequently charged with second-degree murder.
During his arraignment on June 11, prosecutors detailed the alleged crime as a "particularly violent attack," citing evidence such as Bercea's DNA found on the victim. Harris was found on May 2, and the investigation involved seeking tips from park visitors.
Farmington Hills Police Chief John Piggott lauded the community's role, stating the case might not have been solved without their cooperation. Bercea, employed as a machinist with no prior criminal record, had his bond denied and is currently held in the Oakland County Jail. A preliminary exam is scheduled for June 24.
