Trading standards officers in Glasgow recently confiscated nearly 6,000 counterfeit squishy toys from a Commerce Street warehouse. These popular items, often unboxed on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, have spawned a surge in fake versions that fail essential health and safety inspections. The unsafe toys may contain hazardous substances such as phthalates, solvents, and formaldehyde, posing risks of skin irritation, nausea, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Officials estimate the value of the seized counterfeit goods to be approximately £419,000, representing a significant saving in potential health and safety-related costs. Councillor Laura Doherty emphasized the serious dangers these toys present and advised consumers to verify purchases by checking for UKCA/CE markings, manufacturer details, and safety warnings from trusted retailers. Signs of counterfeits include strong chemical odors, lack of packaging, and missing age restrictions or 'do not eat' warnings for food-like items.
