Peelamedu police have registered an extortion case against a 10-member gang who allegedly held a West Bengal garment wholesaler captive. The incident occurred when the wholesaler, Y Debjit Rana, met with associates in Coimbatore.

On August 17, a group led by Anand Kumar and Senthilkumar Periyasamy reportedly confined Rana and two friends at a hotel. They were assaulted and forcibly moved to another hotel in Palladam.

There, the victims were coerced into transferring Rs 26.54 lakh to the gang's bank accounts. Additionally, the assailants robbed them of a one-sovereign gold ring and two smartphones before leaving them near their original hotel.

Rana, after receiving medical treatment, filed a complaint on Friday. Police have initiated a search for the accused under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
