Exotic Pet Neglect: Man Banned from Animals
17 Mar
Summary
- Man banned from keeping animals for five years due to neglect.
- Over 130 exotic animals including snakes and rats seized.
- Neglect occurred during owner's psychotic episode and hospitalization.

Christopher Jones, 39, has received a five-year ban on keeping animals following his admission of prolonged neglect. Magistrates in Wrexham, North Wales, heard that 71 rats, 22 snakes, 18 mice, and other exotic creatures were kept in unsuitable conditions. Over 130 animals were seized, with several rats requiring euthanasia due to their critical state.
Jones was handed a 12-week jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to undertake rehabilitation activity. He was also required to rehome three macaws and pay £500 in costs. The court detailed failures to provide adequate care and veterinary treatment for animals suffering from respiratory issues, weakness, and abscesses between April and August last year.
During a previous hearing, Jones' defense stated that the neglect occurred during a period when he experienced a psychotic episode and was hospitalized. The lawyer emphasized Jones' history as an animal lover, particularly of reptiles, and his struggles with other health conditions and unemployment at the time.
The RSPCA confirmed that many of the seized animals have since been successfully rehomed, highlighting the importance of providing appropriate environments, heating, lighting, and diets for exotic pets, especially reptiles, to ensure their well-being.
