Frustrated Exam Failure Turns to Fraud for Quick Cash and Dowry

On November 9th, 2025, a 32-year-old man from Madhubani district was arrested in Darbhanga for impersonating a police officer and extorting money from unsuspecting citizens. The man, identified as Rishi Kumar Yadav, had failed to clear the police constable recruitment exam earlier this year and resorted to fraud in a desperate attempt to earn quick money and secure a favorable marriage alliance.

Yadav purchased a police uniform and started posing as a law enforcement official, conducting bogus vehicle checks across Darbhanga and extorting money from the people he targeted. His deception came to an end when the local police, acting on a tip-off, arrested him at Benta Chowk on charges of forgery and fraud.

During interrogation, Yadav confessed that he had been impersonating a police officer for several weeks, using the uniform and a fake ID card to dupe people. He had also convinced his family that he had secured a job in the police and was posted in Darbhanga. Yadav's motive was not only financial gain but also the hope of finding a good family and dowry for marriage through his false claims of being a police officer.

The Benta SHO, Harendra Kumar, stated that Yadav is currently in police custody at the Laheriasarai police station, and an FIR has been filed against him on charges of forgery and fraud. He is expected to be sent to judicial custody on Monday, November 13th, 2025.
