Ex-Cop Shared Secrets With Criminal Boyfriend
26 Nov
Summary
- Officer used police systems to search for boyfriend's details.
- Confidential information and images were passed to the boyfriend.
- The officer lied about her relationship and the criminal's history.

An ex-West Yorkshire Police officer, Maryam Ilyas, has been found guilty of gross misconduct for leaking confidential information to her boyfriend, who has a criminal record. The tribunal heard that Ilyas, who joined the force in June 2024, did not disclose her links to the man during her recruitment. Evidence emerged when the boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of drug dealing.
Messages on the man's phone revealed his connection to Ilyas. Further investigations showed she had inappropriately accessed police databases to search for information about him on three separate occasions between March and May 2025. She then shared confidential details about a police operation and images related to it with him.
Despite her claims of having separated from the man in January 2025 and being unaware of his past, the tribunal deemed these statements untrue. Her conduct was described as repeated, sustained, and intentional, leading to the conclusion that she would have been sacked had she not already resigned from the force.
