- Former officer accused of murder claims fear of sexual assault.
- Court documents detail conflicting accounts of the shooting incident.
- The former officer's employment history with two police departments is noted.

A former Creve Coeur police officer, Caitlynn J. Girkin, 27, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the March 10 shooting death of her roommate, Adolfo Cazares, 29. Court documents indicate that Girkin called 911, reporting that Cazares had shot himself with her firearm. However, subsequent interviews with Illinois State Police presented a different narrative.
Initially, Girkin stated Cazares took her gun and shot himself, with his sweatpants falling down as he collapsed. Later, she claimed Cazares entered her bedroom, attempted to touch her leg, and she shot him out of fear of sexual assault. This contradicted her earlier statement and prior consensual sexual acts. She also admitted to sending disturbing Snapchat images to Cazares prior to the shooting.
Girkin's tenure as a police officer is also in question. She previously served with the Peoria Police Department from August 2023 to September 2024 and joined Creve Coeur police full-time in September 2025. Her status as an active member of the Creve Coeur department ceased on June 10, prior to her July 6 arrest.
A court hearing on Thursday saw attorneys request more time to review discovery. Girkin's detention was approved, and her hearing is continued to July 16, with arraignment set for August 6.
