Ex-NBA Player Jailed in Indonesia for Gummies

Former college basketball player Jarred Shaw has been sentenced to 26 months in an Indonesian prison after being caught with cannabis gummies. The 35-year-old, who played for the Tangerang Hawks in the Indonesian Basketball League, was arrested in May for illegally importing 132 edibles from Thailand, valued at $400. Prosecutors argued Shaw intended to distribute the gummies, but he maintained they were for personal use to treat his Crohn's disease.

The judge ultimately did not classify Shaw as a drug trafficker, and evidence of his medical condition played a significant role in mitigating his sentence. This outcome, which includes the seven months Shaw has already served, offers him a chance to return home and reunite with his family, according to a justice advocate working with his legal team.

Shaw, a native of Dallas who previously played for Oklahoma State and Utah State, faced severe penalties, including potential life imprisonment or even the death penalty, given Indonesia's strict drug laws. The 26-month term represents a significant reduction from the initial charges, offering a hopeful resolution for the former athlete.
