Killer Deputy Dies in Prison After Murder Conviction

Former Illinois sheriff's deputy Sean Grayson has died in prison. He was serving a 20-year sentence for the 2024 killing of Sonya Massey. Grayson's attorney announced his death on Sunday, August 23rd.
Grayson had been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2023, with the disease later spreading to his liver and lungs. His health condition became a significant factor in his legal case this year as he sought medical release from prison.
However, the Illinois Prisoner Review Board unanimously rejected his request for medical release in July. Grayson, who was 32 at the time of his conviction in October 2025, remained in custody until his death. The cause of his death has not yet been released.
