Ex-Cop Shot by Colleague Freed on Bail

Kelsey Fitzsimmons, a former Massachusetts police officer shot by a colleague in June, was released on bail this week from Essex Superior Court. The incident occurred as officers attempted to serve her a restraining order filed by her fiancé, who cited threats against their infant son. Fitzsimmons denies pointing her weapon at the three officers present, asserting she aimed it at her own head.

Fitzsimmons had been hospitalized for her gunshot wounds, sustained in the incident, and later moved to jail in September. Her release on bail was contingent on passing a breathalyzer test, which she initially refused. Her attorney argued her recovery from chest wounds made the test difficult. She was released after passing the test and will be under house arrest at her mother's home in Methuen.

The ex-cop faces charges including armed assault with intent to murder, to which she has pleaded not guilty. Her law enforcement certification has been suspended by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. Fitzsimmons's trial is scheduled to begin on February 9. She expressed confidence in the jury system and a desire to be home with her family.
