- Sulfuric acid attack left victim disfigured and lost an eye.
- Accused created song with lyrics about acid attack.
In 2021, Nafiah Ikram, an aspiring doctor, suffered a horrific sulfuric acid attack outside her Long Island home, an event orchestrated by her former boyfriend, Shaquille Coke. Coke, now 31, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault charges. The acid, a highly corrosive substance, caused extensive disfigurement to Ikram's face and body, leading to the loss of one eye.
Prosecutors allege that after the attack, Coke created a fake Snapchat account. Through this account, he reportedly sent vile messages and cruelly mocked Ikram's injuries by likening her to the horror character Freddy Krueger. Coke, a nursing student, allegedly served as the getaway driver, having expressed a desire for something 'devastating' to happen to Ikram.
The district attorney described Coke as a 'jealous, possessive, and jilted former boyfriend' who could not accept their breakup in 2021. Terrell Campbell, 29, also from Brooklyn, is accused of being the one who physically threw the cup of sulfuric acid at Ikram. Phone records and text messages indicated that Coke and Campbell, friends since high school, met approximately one hour before the attack.
Campbell, an aspiring rapper, later released a song titled 'Obsidian' in 2023, containing lyrics that seemingly referenced the acid attack. Prosecutors highlighted this, noting he "brazenly used the attack as material to further his rap career." Campbell also faces charges and has pleaded not guilty, with both men facing up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
