A long-serving administrator, Gerrard Hartley, has been handed a suspended prison sentence for embezzling approximately £146,972.25 from a family scrap metal business. Hartley, who had administered funds for T Holmes & Co in Keighley, West Yorkshire, between March 2017 and late 2022, used the stolen money to fund a lavish lifestyle. This included luxury shopping at establishments such as Harrods and Louis Vuitton, alongside extravagant international holidays. His former employer, Michael Galloway, who has managed the firm for 34 years, voiced extreme dissatisfaction with the court's decision, describing it as "no sentence at all" and expressing deep emotional distress from the betrayal.
While the court acknowledged Hartley's remorse and a gambling disorder assessment, the employer felt the sentence failed to adequately address the harm caused. Hartley received a two-year suspended sentence, 300 hours of unpaid work, and a mental health treatment requirement. Further court proceedings are expected under the Proceeds of Crime Act to attempt recovery of the stolen funds. The employer stated he felt "absolutely disgusted" by the outcome, highlighting the personal and financial impact of the prolonged fraud.
