Russian daredevils Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Beerkus, 32, escalated their romantic gestures by proposing atop the 1,454-foot Empire State Building. The couple bypassed security, accessing a maintenance hatch to reach the building's antenna, where they spent approximately ten minutes.
During their time perched on the antenna, they unfurled a peace banner before Beerkus proposed to Nikolau. The proposal was successful, but their escape ended in arrest several hundred feet below.
Authorities apprehended the couple, charging them with multiple offenses including burglary and reckless endangerment. An Empire State Building spokesperson noted that the stunt posed no danger to visitors but highlighted the availability of legal proposal options.
