Elizabeth Smart's New Podcast: Survivors Share Their Truths

Elizabeth Smart, who was famously abducted as a child, is now using her voice to amplify the stories of other survivors through a new podcast. "The Survivor Files With Elizabeth Smart" features intimate conversations with individuals who have endured violent crimes, delving into the immediate aftermath and the subsequent, often lifelong, process of healing.

Smart, who experienced her own harrowing nine-month ordeal in 2002, interviews guests about their experiences, focusing on their internal thoughts and feelings during the events and their subsequent resilience. She aims to foster empathy by having listeners connect directly with the survivors, understanding the depth of their struggles and the brightness of their recovery.

In her role as interviewer, Smart prioritizes creating a safe space for guests, allowing them to share their stories in their own words and on their own terms. She emphasizes that there is no definitive timeline for healing, a key message drawn from listening to survivors whose experiences, even decades old, remain a work in progress.

Smart also addresses the disparities in media coverage for missing persons, acknowledging the phenomenon of "missing white woman syndrome." She advocates for sharing stories from all walks of life, recognizing the inherent strength in humanity that emerges when individuals are forced to confront adversity. The podcast also touches upon the complex relationship between the true crime genre and public fascination.
