A Brampton man is raising awareness after thieves stole approximately $20,000 worth of jewelry from his 78-year-old mother on July 28. The incident occurred as she was taking her usual evening walk near Chinguacousy Road and Bovaird Drive West. The victim was approached by a woman who gained her trust by pretending to be a neighbor and even touching her feet. This ploy allowed the suspect to place a fake piece of jewelry around the woman's neck while removing her real gold necklace and bangles. The stolen jewelry, amounting to about 110 grams, was a wedding gift from her late husband, a goldsmith, making it incredibly precious. The traumatic event left the victim visibly distressed, unable to walk and speechless for half an hour. Police have identified a white Chevrolet Equinox as a vehicle of interest in connection with the theft and are seeking information. This incident is similar to other distraction-style thefts reported in the GTA, prompting concern among residents who previously felt secure in their community. The victim has since stopped her outdoor walks due to the ordeal.
