Fraud targeting older adults has reached staggering levels, with reported losses among those 60 and older totaling $2.4 billion in 2024. The actual figure is estimated to be much higher due to underreporting. A particularly devastating incident involved Karen and Donald Whitaker, a retired California couple. Karen Whitaker became a victim of an online scammer impersonating actor Tom Selleck, whom she met on Facebook.
The scam began with a small request for money for a fake event and escalated, with Karen ultimately sending approximately $30,000. Despite efforts by friends and law enforcement to show her the account was fraudulent, she remained convinced she was interacting with the real actor. The financial and emotional toll of this deception reportedly led to Donald Whitaker's devastation upon learning the truth. The couple was later found dead in their home in what authorities described as a murder-suicide.
