An 81-year-old man diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer has admitted to attempting to rob a 95-year-old woman in her Salford home. Edwin Morrison, a retired pharmacy courier, strangled his victim and demanded money, stating he needed funds for his own funeral. The incident occurred on January 27. Morrison, who had no previous convictions, targeted the woman after previously visiting her home for deliveries.
The court heard that Morrison had expressed concerns about funding his funeral and had unsuccessfully launched a GoFundMe appeal titled "Help to bury me" on New Year's Day. His barrister stated that the motive was altruistic rather than malicious, stemming from a combination of depression and despair. Morrison's actions were interrupted by the timely arrival of the victim's mobile hairdresser, who alerted the police.
Morrison pleaded guilty to attempted robbery. Prosecutors have requested that charges of false imprisonment and intentional strangulation lie on file. He is currently remanded in custody and will return to Manchester Crown Court for sentencing on April 15. The judge has warned him that an immediate custodial sentence is expected.
