Fourth Inmate Dies in El Paso County Jail This Year

An inmate has died at the El Paso County Downtown jail, representing the fourth in-custody death for the Sheriff's Office this year. The unresponsive individual was discovered by detention officers at approximately 2:40 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, during a routine housing floor check.
Jailhouse medical staff and the El Paso Fire Department responded promptly, initiating life-saving measures. However, the inmate was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. While initial reports suggest no foul play, both the Texas Rangers and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit and Internal Affairs Division are conducting separate investigations.
This incident follows three previous in-custody deaths involving the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in 2026. George Vargas died on January 25, Edward Tomas Moore passed away on May 8, and Roel Contreras died following an arrest on March 20. The Sheriff's Office has also notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards as per state law.
