Cartel Scion Confesses: 'Drug Trafficking is My Job'
2 Dec
Summary
- Son of 'El Chapo' pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.
- He admitted overseeing fentanyl and drug shipments to the U.S.
- The guilty plea avoids a mandatory life sentence for the cartel heir.

Joaquín Guzmán López, a son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, recently pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking and continuing criminal enterprise charges. He confessed in court that his occupation is "drug trafficking," acknowledging his involvement in a major faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, which increased the production and distribution of narcotics, including fentanyl.
The plea agreement allows Guzmán López to evade an automatic life sentence. Prosecutors stated he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and has forfeited his right to appeal. His attorney indicated that further punishment reductions might be considered if he cooperates with authorities. He was arrested in July 2024.
This development follows a similar plea deal by his brother, Ovidio Guzmán López. The elder Guzmán López's plea also includes admitting to participation in a violent kidnapping related to internal cartel disputes, highlighting the organization's brutal tactics. His father, "El Chapo," is currently serving a life sentence without parole in a U.S. prison.
