Summary
- Egyptian TV host Sarah Khalifa sentenced to death by hanging.
- She was arrested in April 2025 for financing a drug manufacturing group.
- Khalifa is appealing her sentence under a new 2024 law.

Egyptian television personality Sarah Khalifa is currently fighting for her life after being sentenced to death by hanging for her alleged involvement in an organized drug ring. Her attorney confirmed that appeal papers would be signed on September 15, as Khalifa maintains her innocence.
Khalifa, a 39-year-old cosmetic clinic owner with 26 million Instagram followers, was arrested in Cairo in April 2025. Prosecutors accused her of being the "principal financier" for a group involved in manufacturing and trafficking synthetic drugs. The case against her includes witness testimonies, digital evidence, and statements from other defendants.
Twenty-eight individuals were charged in the case. Eleven, including Khalifa's brother Mohamed, received death sentences, while nine were sentenced to life imprisonment, and seven were acquitted. The court consulted Egypt's Grand Mufti before imposing the death penalty, a ruling that remains appealable.
Recent legislative changes in Egypt, introduced in 2024, now provide defendants like Khalifa with two avenues for appeal. This process allows for an appellate trial before a potential final review by the Egyptian Court of Cassation, offering a more robust judicial process than previously available.
