Chinatown Double Murder Trial Begins: Plea Entered
20 Jan
Summary
- Accused pleads not guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.
- Victims attacked at work less than a block apart on May 18, 2022.
- Trial delayed over a year due to multiple defense lawyer changes.
The trial of Justin Bone, 40, began Monday with his plea of "not guilty" to two charges of second-degree murder. Bone is accused of the fatal beatings of Ban Phuc Hoang and Hung Trang, who were attacked on May 18, 2022, while at their respective workplaces in Edmonton's Chinatown. The legal proceedings have experienced substantial delays, extending the wait for the victims' families.
The Crown prosecutor detailed how Bone allegedly "viciously beat" both men. Hoang was attacked inside an electronics store, while Trang was assaulted in the service bay of an autobody shop. Evidence presented includes surveillance footage and DNA found under Hoang's fingernails, suggesting a struggle. Bone was arrested days later, and concerns have been raised about his prior interactions with law enforcement.
This case has intensified calls for improved public safety in Chinatown, a neighborhood community members report has long struggled with crime and drug use. Bone's defense plans to challenge police conduct, and he is also undergoing a mental health assessment. The trial is expected to continue through late February, focusing first on the killing of Hung Trang.
