An Edison man, Kenny Osas Okuonghae, received a sentence of 51 months in prison on June 4, 2026. This sentence stems from his involvement in laundering money obtained through widespread internet-based scams.
Okuonghae pleaded guilty on April 29, 2026, to conspiracy to commit money laundering. Between 2019 and December 2023, he facilitated the transfer of criminal proceeds from various online schemes. These included rental scams, romance scams, and sophisticated "pig butchering" operations.
Authorities detailed that "pig butchering" involves creating a false romantic connection to defraud victims into fraudulent investments. Okuonghae established bank accounts at at least seven different financial institutions to funnel these illicit funds.
In addition to his prison sentence, Okuonghae faces three years of supervised release. He has also been ordered to pay $1,275,190 in restitution to victims of the scams he helped facilitate.
