A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred on Friday night near Palavakkam on ECR, where a 62-year-old woman was fatally struck by a speeding car. The victim, R Krishnaveni, was attempting to cross the road around 10 PM when the vehicle collided with her and fled the scene.
Following the accident, passersby alerted emergency services, but the initial ambulance crew at the scene declared the woman deceased, leading to delays. Infuriated by the perceived lack of immediate response, relatives and local residents staged a road blockade, protesting the hour-long wait for police arrival.
Authorities from the Adyar traffic investigation police station arrived and engaged in discussions with the protesters. Investigations led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the vehicle's owner, identified as Manikandan, a restauranteur from Madambakkam. His luxury car was seized in connection with the incident. Police noted that the initial ambulance crew failed to follow proper procedures, necessitating the dispatch of another ambulance from Royapettah government hospital, which further delayed the process of moving the deceased.
