Durban's Central Business District (CBD) is undergoing a remarkable transformation, reporting a substantial decrease in crime and a significant improvement in cleanliness. Since the implementation of a strategic partnership between Ensure Ubuntu, a private urban management firm, and the eThekwini Municipality, visible serious crime has dropped by 28% over the last 14 months. This initiative has led to quicker response times, with Ensure Ubuntu's team responding to over 100 incidents and facilitating the arrest of 290 criminals in collaboration with Durban Metro Police and local SAPS.
The collective efforts have also resulted in the removal of over 841 tons of litter and waste from the city. Ensure Ubuntu's CEO, Kyle Connolly, noted that the visible presence of their team, including foot patrols and tactical vehicles, has deterred criminal activity, with approximately 80% of arrests occurring in the initial three months. Plans are underway to further enhance the CBD by introducing anti-litter campaigns, increasing the number of public bins, and providing mobile toilets for commuters.
This collaborative approach is not only enhancing safety and cleanliness but also fostering economic revitalization. Nkululeko Mkhize from the City's Economic Development Directorate highlighted that a more secure and attractive environment encourages investment, trade, and small business growth within the Durban CBD.
