- The company failed to implement adequate security measures.

South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission has levied a substantial fine of 1.21 billion won (approximately $815,400) against the prominent matchmaking service, Duo. This action follows a major data breach that occurred last year, compromising the sensitive personal details of over 420,000 members.
The breach exposed information such as members' weight, blood type, marital status, phone numbers, addresses, educational background, and workplaces. The commission cited Duo's failure to implement sufficient safeguards for its membership database and a delayed response after the hacking incident as reasons for the penalty.
Furthermore, Duo was found to have violated regulations concerning the collection and storage of personal data, including citizenship ID numbers and passwords. The company also neglected to delete the data of nearly 300,000 members whose information was gathered more than five years ago.
Duo, known for facilitating over 53,000 weddings, acknowledged the findings and expressed deep regret for not adequately protecting its members' data. The company described the breach as resulting from a highly sophisticated and difficult-to-detect hacking attack.
