Summary
- Man accused of killing couple in DUI crash faces jury trial.
- Suspect had BAC over twice legal limit, multiple prior DUIs.
- Crash left 11 children without parents.

David Alvarado, a six-time DUI offender, is slated to go to trial for allegedly killing a husband and wife in a fatal DUI crash that occurred last year. The collision, which prosecutors state Alvarado caused by rear-ending the victims' vehicle, has left 11 children without their parents. Alvarado's blood-alcohol content at the time of the crash was reportedly more than double the legal limit.
During court proceedings, witnesses detailed the tragic events of that night. Authorities confirmed Mary Handin died at the scene, while her husband, Paul Handin, succumbed to his injuries days later. A correctional sergeant described attempts to aid the victims. Investigators presented evidence that Alvarado had been previously warned about the dangers of driving under the influence, a fact he acknowledged.
The defense argued that Alvarado may not have fully understood the implications of the Watson advisement, which warns DUI offenders of potential consequences. However, the judge dismissed this, noting Alvarado's extensive history of six prior DUI convictions meant he should have been fully aware of the extreme dangers associated with impaired driving. Alvarado is scheduled to return to court on July 16, 2026, to set a trial date.
